Notches

Standard

I’m at SAW, noticing the notches I’ve put on the beam across my loft studio space. Notches, one for each time I’ve hit my head on that beam. I’ve hit my head on a lot of stuff, this beam is bad, but I found that it’s not even in the top three so far as horrid things to hit your head on goes. I know that number two was coral. I hit my head on coral in the Philippines while SCUBA diving. Number one was the time I hit my head on a castle in Ireland… now THAT smarted! I don’t know what number three was, but it’s not that beam, perhaps its corners… hitting my head on the corners of things is a real drag. I avoid that.

Anyhow, I got so tired of hitting my head on the beam that I started keeping track, and while I hate hitting my head (probably no more or less than anyone else, as I think about it) I was bothered to note that as of yesterday (when I started notching) I had only 4 notches… it somehow seemed so dreadfully incomplete, like the whole notch thing needed some closure, so I put a second set of notches, labeling it with a red “V” for visitor (my notches are labeled with a red “J” for… well, obviously, Justine) the notches incidently are black. it still looked unfinished and in need of closure. Now the danger is that with the “V” label over the 3 notches indicating the number of times I have witnessed visitors, friends, and guests hitting their heads, I’m afraid I’ll be tempted to not tell them “Watch your head.’ Not out of some sadistic chuckle I’ll get out of watching people braing themselves on my dastardly beam, not even ’cause I’m ashamed that my notches number 4 and theirs 3. No, I’m afraid I won’t tell them to watch their heads because once I start notching something I want lots and lots of notches. Who doesn’t?

After some time I figured that what my whole notch system needed was a marker, so I taped a Sharpie to the beam, terribly handy, I won’t put off marking the notches for lack of a marker or laziness stemming from not having the energy to track one down. Yet, still the whole system needed some closure. Something was still missing.

Just yesterday, the very day I started keeeping track with notches, perhaps out of some subconscious desire to see another notch up there, I hit my head on the damn beam again. VIOLA! That was it, that was the closure I needed, that one diagonal notch marking the fifth head bonk! Five notches, now that’s satisfying.

By the way, if you visit my studio in the loft, watch your head!
